At approximately 1:00pm yesterday afternoon (July 16), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a male on foot acting erratically on Buchanan Drive, crossed University Ave and proceeded to enter the Charlottetown mall. The male was also reported to have exited a parked SUV prior to crossing the street.
Police attended the mall to check on the wellbeing of the male. E-watch video surveillance was utilized to locate the parked vehicle, which was parked in the parking lot across the street. A short time after, the male was captured on e-watch running from the mall towards his parked vehicle, he entered the vehicle and left the area heading south on University Avenue. An Officer that was in the mall parking lot proceeded to attempt to pull the vehicle over, but it did not stop and continued south on University Ave.
A second Police vehicle was waiting for the fleeing vehicle at the intersection of Belvedere and University with emergency lights activated. Traffic at the time was heavy and the fleeing vehicle went around the stationary police vehicle, crossed University Ave and drove through a business parking lot and turned onto Belvedere Ave proceeding at a high rate of speed. For public safety reasons, Police did not pursue the vehicle and turned their emergency equipment off.
Officers involved were able to identify the driver, and other units attended the suspects residence. Officers were able to intercept him as he arrived home and he was arrested without incident.
A 31 year old Charlottetown male was subsequently charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and driving while suspend under the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused was released from custody and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.
